Elliot Sloss

Cello, North York Music Festival concerto winner

Elliot Sloss

Elliot Sloss started playing the cello when he was four years old, and in the 12 years since, his love for his cello and music has taken him many places.

He currently studies with Paul Widner at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Canada where he is participating in the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists.

Elliot is a three-time 1st place winner in the national round for strings in the Canadian Music Competition. Most recently, he won in the 15-18 year old Chamber Music category, performing Schulhoff’s Duo for Violin and Cello with his friend and musical duet partner, Duncan McDougall.

In addition to his primary teacher, Elliot has had the opportunity of playing in masterclasses or studying with many great cello masters including Bryan Epperson, Tom Wiebe, Rachel Mercer, Paul Pulford, Susan Moses, Roberta Jansen, David Hetherington, Csaba Onczay, Peter Stumpf, Warren Hagerty, Amir Eldan, Frans Helmerson, Lluis Claret, Francis Gouton, Harro Ruijsenaars, Corine 't Hoen, Amparo Lacruz, and Jan-Ype Nota.

He has attended many summer music academies in Canada, the U.S., Switzerland, and the Netherlands. He has played in many ensembles, and one of his favourite chamber performances was playing Mendelssohn’s string octet.

Elliot plays on a David Wiebe cello generously on loan from the Grace and Bruce Galler Instrument Collection.
